Obituary for Philip M. Overton M.d.

Philip M. Overton, M.D., died on September 12, 2011, in Lubbock, Texas, where his grandfather, Dr. M. C. Overton, had been a pioneering doctor. His death ended a long and valiant struggle with serious health issues and brought peace to our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Born in Dallas to Marietta Bass and Philip R. Overton on December 29, 1930, Phil soon moved to Austin where he rode ponies in Pease Park, attended Brykerwoods Elementary School, University Junior High, Austin High, and the University of Texas. Phil was a 1955 graduate of the U.T. Medical Branch in Galveston and interned at Parkland Hospital, Dallas. While a student in Galveston he joined the Episcopal Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at the 44th Mash in Korea. Phil practiced orthopaedic surgery in Austin for forty-four years, founding Medical Park Orthopaedic Clinic with Dr. Bob Dennison and Dr. Fred Lowry.
He was an early supporter of the Austin Symphony, Laguna Gloria, and the Heritage Society of Austin, where he served on the board. His social memberships included the Admirals Club, Headliners Club, Tarry House, Coronet Dance Club and Argyle Club of San Antonio. While not on call, Phil enjoyed art, classical music, gardening and a scotch and soda before dinner. He was a can-do man around the house who could repair or build anything after making several trips to Breed's for supplies. Among his family and friends he was considered a cherub with a devilish streak.
Phil is survived by his wife of 42 years, Hanne; his daughter, Hanne-Lise and her husband, Jay Parker; his grandchildren, Morgan and Lawson; cousins, Dr. M.C. Overton III and Dr. Todd Overton and their families; aunts, Ruth Carlock and Nan Overton West and their families.
"Now cracks a noble heart,
Goodnight sweet prince,
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest"
Memorial Service and Committal will be held on Friday, September 16, at 2 p.m., Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 3201 Windsor Rd. Memorial contributions may be made to Church of the Good Shepherd or to the charity of your choice.
