Edward George Volick, our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and great uncle passed away October 3, 2012, at the Summit in Lakeway after a suffering a major stroke at the age 91. He is now dancing in the heavens with his loving wife, Lucy Volick.

Ed was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on January 24, 1921, to George and Katherine Woloch. He was proceeded in death by his parents and his wife Lucy (Ludmilla Demitrienko) Volick, the love of his life, and his daughter Kathleen Volick.

He is survived by his son Thomas and spouse Vicki Volick, their two children and five great-grandchildren. Grandson, Marc and spouse Ashley Byers and their children Avery and Cameron and Granddaughter, Alison and spouse David DeStefano and their children Rylee, Sophia and Ashlynn. He is also survived by his sister Mary and many nieces and nephews in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. And his adored cat "Scooter".

Ed attended Kennedy High School in Windsor where he played, football, basketball, baseball and hockey, lettering in all sports. He was very active in the Polish Youth Groups and Young Businessmen’s Societies and was mentioned many times in the local Windsor newspapers for his contributions and accomplishments. He attended the Detroit Institute of Technology and graduated with a Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

In 1943, after graduating from college, Ed enlisted into the Royal Canadian Air Force and after graduating from RCAF airman school, he became a Flight Engineer on the Halifax Heavy Bomber. When the war ended in 1945, Ed returned home to Windsor to start a successful Die-casting company supplying parts to the major automakers in Detroit and Windsor. There he met Lucy Demitrienko, his wife who worked as a mechanical punch machine operator. Lucy was a vivacious blond bombshell, who survived being a WWII prisoner of war by being selected to work in a German officer's home as a maid. After the war she immigrated to Canada because Stalin was killing returning prisoners by the millions. Ed and Lucy married in 1952, and had a son in 1953, Thomas E. Volick. Ed and Lucy adopted Kathy Volick in 1963, who sadly passed away in 2003, from health issues. She was a bright star to the family and brought many delightful moments to Ed, Lucy and Tom.

Ed sold his company in Windsor and moved to California in 1956, with his family. There he got involved with the space program and worked with NASA subcontractors during the Gemini to Shuttle era. In the space program he worked as a design engineer, safety engineer, and most recently at the NASA Space Center as a Mechanical Engineer on flight simulators for the shuttle. Ed loved the space program and was very interested in space travel since his time as a flight engineer in the RCAF. His most memorable years were in the Apollo program for Boeing as a safety engineer when he worked with many of the astronauts during their flight simulation training in California. Ed received many achievement awards for his contributions to the Apollo program and the US mission to land a man on the moon.

Ed was an active member of the Catholic Church from youth and was very involved with The Polish Catholic youth group and was president for several years. After Ed retired from the space program fully, in 1990, he enjoyed many years on Clear Lake, living at the Landing Condominiums where he attended St Joseph Parish. He suffered a stroke in 2006, and moved to Lakeway, Texas, to live in the Summit Assisted Living Center to be near his son's family. At 86, Ed joined the Emmaus Parish in Lakeway and became an active member. There he continued his 72 years of service as a Knights of Columbus and received a special award as a 4th Degree Knight from the Assembly 2767. He was an active member until the age of 90 as part of the Color Corp for the Knights of Columbus and attended many services. He was a beloved member of the Knights where his optimistic attitude and dancing skills were appreciated.

In his retirement years, Ed had a great love for playing tennis and attending many Polka Dances. He was a very active member in the Polk-of-A Club of Texas. Ed always danced until the band quit playing and made sure he danced with every pretty girl!

We will miss Ed's warm smile, his gentle spirit and his love for life. He had a positive influence on everyone he touched. His memory will always be etched in our minds.

Services for Ed will be held at 1:30 pm, on Saturday October 13th, at the Emmaus Parish in Lakeway with a "Celebration of his Life" reception to follow.
