Obituary for Maxine Wiles

The vivacious and feisty Maxine Wiles succumbed to bilateral pneumonia on September 25th. She was born on October 24th, 1920 to the Quinn family in Adelaide, Australia. After graduation from Catholic school, the stage called. Her active career in live vaudeville and radio led to a handshake and praise from Sir Noel Coward while she entertained WWII troops. At this time, she met American Air Force mechanic Clifton Wiles. They married in San Francisco and moved to his family farm in Marienthal, Kansas, afterwards residing in several Oklahoma and Texas cities before settling in Austin. Maxine worked as a secretary for the Defense Research Laboratory of UT and Chevron while continuing her entertainment career.

Her Catholic faith and membership in Austin's St. Louis Church sustained her through the death of Clifton, Alzheimer's and other illnesses. Her surviving son, Quinton, is grateful to the institutions that assisted her during this period, including Ashwood Assisted Living, Austin Lakes Hospital, Brighton Gardens (now Emeritus), Heartland Health Care, St. David's North Austin Medical Center, St. Thomas More Church and Seton and Seton NW Hospitals.

In lieu of flowers, please donate funds to Alzheimer's research or an Austin charity.

Maxine's memorial service will be held at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home on North Lamar at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 2.
