Obituary for Gerald Ray Pence

Gerald Ray Pence, 74, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and friend went home to our Lord on Wednesday, September 26, 2012. He was born October 8, 1937 in Sadler, Texas to Grover and Pearl Pence. He is preceded in death by his mother; father; sister, Hazel Crafton; nephew, Stanley Crafton. He is survived by his wife, Zenaida (Sandy) Pence of 46 years; daughter, Carmen Fluitt; granddaughters, Victoria and Taylor Fluitt; brother, Gordon Pence; nephews, Shannon Pence, Brian Pence, Larry Crafton, Clifford Crafton; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In 1955 Gerald moved to Austin and started working for Dean Johnston, Inc. He was called for duty with the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas when he met and married Sandy. After his military service he returned to work for Johnston where he worked for 45 years. He loved his electrical trade and was part of the many building projects in Austin. He was a long time resident of the City of Rollingwood. He volunteered with the City’s Volunteer Fire Dept for several years and held with the maintenance of the neighborhood swimming pool.

He was a humble, hard working, kind, and honest man. Gerald (Pappy) cherished his family and close friends and helped anyone in need. During hot summer days, he would set out cans of cold drinks and honey buns for the garbage collectors. He enjoyed sitting in front of the fireplace on a cold evening with his wife, watching a football game or a western movie and eating ice cream. He especially loved feeding the deer and other animals that came around. He loved trains and old country songs, metal detecting, fishing, playing dominoes and crossword puzzles.

We will miss “Pappy” and his little ways of expressing his love for those around him.

Honoring Gerald and serving as pallbearers will be Gordon Dodd, Jesse Houston, Leroy Simons, Otto Soefje, J.C. Hutson, Orlando Kell, Shawn Sanders, and Gilbert Madrid.

Visitation will be held Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress Avenue from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm with the Holy Rosary at 7:00 pm. The family would like to extend their gratitude and thanks to the wonderful care-givers of AseraCare Hospice.
