Obituary for Meta Lois Inman Hughes

Meta Lois Inman Hughes
October 2, 1917 – September 25, 2012

Meta Lois Inman was born October 2, 1917, in Chadbourn, N.C., to Nina Emma Mellet Inman and Stanley Baldwin Inman.

The third of four children, Meta was raised in Andrews, South Carolina. She chose to follow her mother’s profession, and obtained an R.N. from Baltimore General Hospital, and moved to Martinsville, VA, to serve as the Head Operating Room nurse at the local county hospital. It was in Martinsville where she met her future husband, Dr. Grey C. Hughes.

They were married in 1942, and became the parents of Betty Grey and Carol Ann, choosing to raise them in Hampton, Virginia, where Dr. Hughes maintained a pediatric practice until his death in 1972. Meta had seven grandchildren, Paige (Kenny Slayton), Nan (John Greeley), and Molly Lawson; and Susan (Peter Cizik), Camila (Andrew Kunau), Michael (Amy) and Gantt (Elizabeth) Walton. She was delighted to get to spend quality time with her many great-grandchildren, who will have fond memories of her to share for years.

Meta moved to Austin, Texas in 1976 to live with her daughter, Betty, son-in-law Mike Walton, and their family.

Throughout her life, Meta was active in the community. She was a lifelong member of the P.E.O. In Austin, she was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School class at Tarrytown United Methodist Church, rarely missing a Sunday. She had a close group of friends, nicknamed “The Magnolias”, with whom she regularly dined, played bridge, laughed, and traveled. Meta joined the St. David’s Hospital volunteer auxiliary, known as the “Robins”, where she took great pride in utilizing her nursing experience to enrich the lives of her patients and their families.

Meta, lovingly known as Mimi to everyone who met her, was ever-present at school and athletic activities for her family; always the first to the game, and last to leave. She was always ready in the kitchen to prepare a meal for hungry children, showing her love through cooking. Mimi always had a way with children and generations loved to be with her. She could make them laugh with abandon and could play patiently for hours on end. The stories everyone has of her love and selflessness could take years to tell. She will be remembered forever, and loved always.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care and friendships she developed at the Summit, especially Jody, Rene, Carmen, Suzan, Mary Ann, Jameson, Angela, Violet, Danita and Hayat.

Meta is preceded in death by her husband Grey, and daughter Carol.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, October 6, 2012, at Tarrytown United Methodist Church, located at 2601 Exposition Boulevard, Austin, TX, 78703. She will be laid to rest in Parklawn Memorial Park, 2551 N Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the P.E.O. International or the Settlement Home for Children in Austin.
