Obituary for Louise "Candy" Baker

Billie Louise "Candy" Luckett Baker, left this world for a better place on the morning of September 21, 2012 in the city she loved, Austin, Texas. Born on November 13, 1928, Louise grew up in New Braunfels, the eldest of two daughters of Jessie Luckett Krueger and Alton Joseph Luckett.

A natural athlete, Louise swam in the crystal clear waters of the Comal, was active in school clubs and an avid camper and camp counselor for several years in Texas and Wisconsin. In 1946, she left New Braunfels to attend her parents' alma mater, the University of Texas, where she dazzled as Bluebonnet Belle Nominee, joined the Campus League of Women Voters, and was a Sweetheart finalist. She was an officer of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and upperclass advisor to Littlefield Dormitory. A degree in journalism lead her to pursue further studies at Radcliffe College at Harvard and was the source of years of letter writing that kept her family amused and entertained throughout her life.

She moved to New York City to work for Parent's Magazine, returning to Texas to live in Dallas for the next thirty years. For several years she was a coordinator for the Miss Teenage America pageant. Her eye for color and fashion lead her to the Dallas Market where she worked with various showrooms. With her sister, Ellie, she articulated her sense of style into the Eloise line of clothing before pursuing a career in real estate. Volunteer activities included the Junior League of Dallas and St. Michael's Woman's Exchange.

To her family, Louise was a most loved "Aunt Candy," known for her careful and thoughtful gift giving-an art that she refined to perfection, right down to the exquisite gift wrapping. She enjoyed discovering the latest trend, in fashion or pop culture or dining, and sharing her finds in small gifts, letters with magazine clippings, or invitations to dine out. But a meal was always about the company, the conversation, and the time together. She cared deeply for politics, local and national, and must be very disappointed not to vote in the upcoming presidential election. The holidays will be quieter without her dry sense of humor and the puzzle will take longer to put together without her quick eye and desire to see the picture completed.

Preceded in death by her parents, Alton Luckett and Jessie Luckett Krueger and her beloved niece, Frances Schneider Mertz, she is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Ellie and Jack Schneider of Austin; her nieces and nephews; John and Mary Pat Schneider, Austin; Mary and Will Pitts, Austin; Phyllis and John Russell, Chicago; James and Mary Frances Schneider, Austin, Catherine Schneider, Dallas. She was also adored by her 20 great nieces and nephews. She leaves behind her dear companion, Annie the cat, and close friends in Austin, New Braunfels, and Dallas.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 26th in the Chapel of Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home on North Lamar. Interment will follow at the Comal Cemetery in New Braunfels.
