Obituary for Betty Murphy Brock

Betty D. Murphy Brock passed away on Friday, September 21, 2012. She was born on November 1, 1926 to H. G. (Pat) and Mary Clover Murphy in Spur, Texas.

Betty graduated from Seymour High School in 1943. In 1946 she was living in Eastland, Texas where she met and married Francis J. Brock. Fran was teaching at Texas Tech when he was recalled to the Air Force in 1952, and they enjoyed being based in Lubbock Texas, England, SMU, and North and South Carolina.

When Fran died in 1964, Betty moved to Abilene, Texas and completed a BS degree at McMurry and an MA degree at Hardin-Simmons. She taught at McMurry in Abilene before moving to Austin in 1970 to do post-graduate work. Later, Betty returned to England to audit courses for two terms at Cambridge University. Her last full-time employment was working for a number of years as a Training Specialist for the Industrial Education Dept. at the University of Texas Austin, which she very much enjoyed.

These past years, Betty’s life was spent loving her new role as a grandmother and taking care of two grandsons from 8 weeks old through their early elementary years while her son and daughter-in-law worked. She enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends, attending the Fellowship Forum SS class at the University Methodist Church, volunteering at Seton Hospital, assisting with the Campbell-Neumann Estate Sales, playing bridge with her “Wild Bunch” friends, being an ardent fan of the Boston Red Sox, attending the Lakeway Church and always consciously grateful that she’d had such a wonderful life.

Survivors are her son Kyle, his wife Diana and their sons, Carson Francis and Evan David of Lakeway; her son David of Palo Alto, CA; brother-in-law Howard Martin Brock of Lake Jackson, TX; sisters-in-law Betty Murphy of Homeland, CA and Marjorie Murphy of San Antonio,TX and related family members. Betty was preceded in death by her brothers H. B. “Bob” Murphy in CA and P. H. “Pat” Murphy in San Antonio, TX.

Betty and her family gratefully thank all who made her know that she had such a full and blessed life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the charity of your choice.

Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, September 28, 2012 from 2:00-3:00pm at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home located at 3125 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX 78705. A funeral service will be held out-of-town for the family.
