Obituary for Ronald Douglas Matthys

Ronald Douglas Matthys, 75, of Pflugerville passed away peacefully at home with family present on Tuesday, September 18, 2012.

Ron was born in Houston, Texas to Herbert and Elsie (Becker) Matthys on July 3, 1937. He married Barbara Stehling on November 8, 1969 in Austin, Texas.

Ron graduated from Concordia High School in Austin, Texas in 1955. He attended the University of Texas where he earned bachelors and masters degrees in structural engineering. After a 20 year career as a structural engineer, Ron earned his doctorate at the University of Texas at Arlington. For the next 15 years Ron was a professor of structural engineering at Texas A&M University Kingsville. Teaching engineering students was one of his passions.

Ron was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church where he served as an usher, participated in the Tuesday Morning Men’s Prayer Breakfast and loved playing dominos at Jet Set.

Ron is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Jennifer and husband Ken Neafcy of Seattle, Washington and son Neil Matthys of Paris, France.

The family wishes to thank everyone for their many prayers and support during this time. The loving care provided by Hospice Austin was outstanding.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 21, 2012 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home on North Lamar. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 22nd at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park.
