Obituary for Norma E. Smith

Norma E. Smith
Norma E. Smith, 82, of The Hills, Texas joined her Heavenly Father on Sunday, September 9, 2012 surrounded by her husband, J.R. and loving family.

Norma was born on August 8, 1930 in Shamrock, Texas to parents, R.T. and Pearl Dickinson. The family moved to McLean, Texas where she spent her school years. While attending McLean High School, she participated in the school drama program. Following high school graduation in 1947, she enrolled in TSCW in Denton, Texas. While attending college, she met the love of her life. Norma and J.R. were married on September 10, 1950 in her hometown of McLean. After a brief honeymoon in Colorado, they made their home in Dallas, Texas. Norma worked at Carpenter Paper Company. After 6 months of marriage, J.R. went into the Army and Norma moved to Amarillo where she was employed at the Air Force Base. Following two years of military service, Norma and J.R. re-established their home in Dallas. Norma then worked at Dallas Rupe & Sons Brokerage Company in an administrative position.

In 1956, Norma left the business community in order to start her family and began raising their two daughters. At the same time, she motivated and supported her husband who worked full time and attended SMU at night until his graduation twelve years later.

Beginning in 1966, Norma started working at The Dallas Trade Mart as a Marketing Representative. She also volunteered many hours at their daughters’ school and enjoyed garden club activities where she demonstrated her many decorating talents. She was a neighborhood leader as well as a bridge club enthusiast.

In 1970, Norma and J.R. relocated their family to Houston, Texas. Norma participated in her daughters’ numerous school activities while enjoying social clubs, 3 dance clubs, and other community activities. She was a member of the Tallowood Baptist Church. In 1973 she re-entered the working world at The Windmill Dinner Theatre where she served as the Marketing Manager. She enjoyed being associated with many Hollywood and Broadway stars that found their way to the theatre. Her chief motivation for working was for funding her daughters’ college educations. Following the graduation of the girls, Norma left the theatre career and was able to spend quality time with her growing family and four grandchildren.

In 1985 life took a traumatic turn when Norma was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. With the help of talented doctors and loving family she was able to become a cancer survivor and she has supported The American Cancer Society throughout the years.

Norma and J.R. became members of the Riverbend Country Club in Missouri City, Texas where they enjoyed golf and other social activities. J.R. retired in 1991, which afforded them numerous opportunities to travel across the United States.

May, 1996 Norma and J.R. made the decision to change residence and move to Lakeway, Texas while building their dream home in The Hills, Texas. Life in the greater Lakeway area became the answer to a retired couple’s dream. Norma participated in many social events, golf at the Country Club, along with International travel. Norma and J.R. were members of the Mayfair and Lakeway Ballroom Dance Clubs and they enjoyed many of those social activities throughout the years.

Norma is survived by her husband, J.R., of 62 loving years and daughter Denise Inman and her husband Philip of The Woodlands, Texas, daughter Diane Decker and her husband Keith of Sugar Land, Texas, four grandchildren, Lauren and Alan Inman, and Matthew and Drew Decker.
