Obituary for Robert Andrew McMillan

Robert Andrew McMillan
1958 – 2012

Robert Andrew McMillan was born to Dorothy Kalmbach McMillan and Claude Carter McMillan on May 13, 1958, in Austin, Texas. Bob or Bobby, as he was known to friends and family, passed away on September 4, 2012, at his home in Llano County at the ranch he loved so dearly.

Bob graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1976, where he played football for the Maroons. Bob went on to The University of Texas at Austin, graduating in 1981 with a Bachelors Degree in Communications.

After college, Bobby pursued his love of photography, becoming a professional photographer in Houston, Texas. After his father’s death in 1983, Bob returned to Austin and soon began to pursue his passion, traveling all over the world as a photojournalist and covering conflicts in far away places such as Lebanon and Afghanistan. Bobby was in Beirut during the Civil War, spending time on both sides of the Green Line. A few years later, he went into Afghanistan with the mujahedeen, photographing their guerilla war against the Soviet Army. After his world travels, Bobby returned to Austin, where he continued his work in photography and eventually became a photographer for FEMA, recording the Agency’s work in disaster stricken areas around the country.

Bob was a lover of nature and the outdoors, which led him to eventually settle at his ranch in Llano County, where he spent the last 7 years of his life. Bob will always be remembered for his keen intellect, his good sense of humor, and his compassion and kindness towards others. Wherever he went, people were always impressed with his larger than life stature. In Mexico, they called him Gigante or “Giant”, and in the Middle East his nickname, loosely translated, was “a Crowd of One”. But as impressive as his physical presence may have been, it could in no way compare to the size of his huge heart. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. He truly left us all too soon.

Bobby was preceded in death by his father, Claude Carter McMillan.

Bobby is survived by his mother, Dorothy McMillan Andrews and stepfather Curtis Andrews. He is also survived by his sister Nancy McMillan Higgs and her children Robert and Kelsey; by his sister Kathy McMillan Taylor, her husband Tim Taylor, and their children Charles, Kathryn, Mary Elizabeth, and Claudia; and by many other members of the McMillan, Kalmbach, Andrews, and Taylor families. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend.

A service in Witness to the Resurrection and Thanksgiving for Bobby’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 10, 2012, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3208 Exposition Blvd., Austin.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests contributions in Bob’s memory to Austin Pets Alive, the Coastal Conservation Association, or the charity of your choice.
