Obituary for Homer Cunningham

Homer Davis Cunningham passed away peacefully at the Christopher House on August 23, 2012, surrounded by loved ones. Homer was born May 11, 1931, to Annie and Coleman Cunningham in Hempstead, Texas. His family moved to Austin in 1941, where he graduated from Austin High School in 1950. He later attended Lee Junior College. He is survived by his wife, Saundra Roark, sons and daughters-in-law, Coleman and Jeanne Cunningham, Kyle and Betty Cunningham, and daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Bill Hayden, all of the Austin area. Brother Jack Cunningham and brother Arthur Cunningham, and his wife Claire, also survive him. Seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren will miss their special "Pop."

Homer loved Jesus, his family and life. He was a dreamer who usually attained his dreams. As a teen he wanted a boat for fishing; he built himself a boat. As a man he wanted a lake house. He built himself a lake house with lots of help from friends and family, sleeping under the deck when it rained during construction. He served multiple terms as President of Blue Cove Property Owners Association, where he spearheaded the construction of the new Singleton Road bridge.

Homer was attuned to the beauty of God's creation. In healthier years he was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman, hunter, birder, hiker, gardener, and photographer. An accomplished artist, he painted Hill Country landscapes that he sold, gave away and used for barter when times were tough. He appreciated the tiniest wildflower and the fastest little bird.

Homer worked at Jefferson, later Texaco, Chemical, retiring after 23 years. He was a member of the Coast Guard Reserves and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. He was also a long-term member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, and an active member in Travis Audubon.

While Homer will be missed as husband, father, grandfather and friend, we are confident he has been welcomed into God's Kingdom, singing with joy as he did in life. And as Homer would say, "Praise the Lord!"

The family wants to express our gratitude to all Homer’s friends and to the staff at Christopher House for their love, support and tender care during this difficult time.

Visitation will be from 6 pm to 8 pm on Saturday, August 25, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home at 3125 N. Lamar, Austin. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, August 26, 2012, at Hillcrest Baptist Church, Austin. Graveside services will follow at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.
