Obituary for Jack "Jiggs" Ziller

Jack Leslie Ziller "Jiggs" (as he was known to his family) was born on August 1, 1934 to Ruth Albers and Jack Waverly Ziller in Austin, Texas. They lived in the historic Ziller family house at 12th and Blanco until the flood of 1936. The family escaped Austin's failing sewer systems and traveled to Hutto, to live with the Albers family on their farm. Later, they resided in various places in Austin, notably on East Avenue (which became IH-35) and Romeria Drive. He attended Austin High School.

Jack served in the US Navy from 1952-1954, where he specialized in cryptography. He later enlisted in the US Air Force, served from 1955-1959 as an Airman Third Class. Jack enjoyed sharing his knowledge of military and history with all who would listen.

He began a 30-year career with the US Postal Service when he returned to Austin. For a time in the '60s, he also operated his own remodeling company, Aztec Construction. He served as a substitute teacher in both Leander and Liberty Hill ISDs during his retirement, and was also a school bus driver for Liberty Hill ISD.

Jiggs was a man of many hobbies and interests. He loved animals – at one time bred spaniels for show, volunteered time as a rodeo announcer, and enjoyed working with his own livestock (especially horses). Jack created ceramic art, making several pieces that are now family heirlooms. He participated in the community as an election official, fundraising for the Liberty Hill Band Boosters when it was first created, and was a charter member of the VFW Post 8200 in Liberty Hill.

"Third time's a charm" in marriage for Jack. He enjoyed almost 36 years with Rhanae Hoppe, of Winters, Texas. They cherished life together on their small farm in Liberty Hill and raised their two children, Anricka Belen Ziller and Kyle Jason Ziller. Jack was previously wed to Joyce Ford of New Mexico, with son Zane Leslie Ziller, and Frances Inez Barnett, of North Texas, with sons Erik Leslie Ziller and James Karl Ziller.

He is survived by all previously listed, sister Patricia Gail Garner, 4 nephews and 2 nieces, 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and cousins from "the old Austin family" of the Zillers (Jack himself was a 5th-generation Texan/Austinite, soon to be inducted to the Sons of the Republic of Texas). He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Judith Ann Kinney.

Visitation will be held at the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N Lamar, on Thursday, April 12, from 6-8 pm. Graveside service is 11am on Friday, April 13, at the Liberty Hill Cemetery. The family requests that those in attendance wear cowboy boots and/or hats as a way to honor Jack's style and humor.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Christ Lutheran Church in Georgetown or the VFW Post 8200.
