Obituary for Raymond Carl Zumwalt

Raymond Carl Zumwalt of Austin passed away June 4, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 80. He was born August 16, 1931, to Oscar Lee and Frances Zumwalt of Gonzales, Texas, and is survived by brothers Clyde and Wallace Zumwalt of Gonzales and his wife of 41 years, Diana Dawson Zumwalt.
Ray entered the U S Army in 1952 by the voluntary draft, assigned to the Signal Corps and was sent to
Fairbanks, Alaska. In the rotation of Battle Groups in 1956 he transferred to Fort Lewis, Washington, in charge of the Signal Platoon, Headquarters Company. In 1960 he was assigned as Station Chief, 513th Military Intelligence Group, Munich, Germany. He was recruited in 1963 to transfer to the White House Communications Agency and was assisting the Secret Service when President Kennedy was assassinated. Recruited by the U S Secret Service in 1966, he continued to serve at the White House until his retirement in 1986 during the term of President Reagan. He retired as Chief of the U S Secret Service Technical Security Division's Physical Security Branch.
Retiring to his wife's native home of Austin, he enjoyed golf, extensive travel, and being an active member of his community. Known for his helpfulness and generosity, he will be missed by many.
Special appreciation goes to Drs. Fain and Dziuk along with the staff of Texas Oncology and Austin
Hospice's Christopher House for their compassionate care.
