Condolence From: Mo Murray Jul 01, 2012
Condolence: Like many, I met James at Showdown. Always a friendly smile and a ready funny tale. I was once so despondent over the Redskins that I asked James if Green Bay was accepting fans. He assured me they were, but I'd have to agree to go up there and eat bratwurst. I told him I'd give Washington another chance. He was like that--so quick and humorous. And of course a true blue friend. I'll really miss that. Condolences to you, April. Thanks for sharing him with all of us for all these years. Love to you both.

Condolence: James, You and April are the best neighbors a guy could ask for--friendly, depenndable, accessible, and helpful at all times. Our yard-to-yard conversations were some of the best I've ever had. I will always remember your unassuming intellect, good humor, and adventurous spirit, and the countless personal and neighborly courtesies you extended to me and my family and friends. There is no one like you. You will be missed and never forgotten by me, Isabella, and Darshan. Love always, Ara

Condolence: James is one of two men I have known that were truly special people. James was special because of the characteristics that made him the man he was-honest, truthful, humble, a great sense of humor and an altruistic nature. I knew James for 30 years-through work, the showdown AND the fishing trips, which undoubtedly provide the abundance of my memories for the tales I shall spin of such. I hope I never forget. See ya later Jaime...

Condolence: For twenty years I have been trying to convince James to run for City Council thinking what an awesome force he would be. To that end, whenever I saw him I always greeted him Councilman Rohlich. It always made us laugh. He was an early friend when I moved here in 1981 and I will never forget the first time I saw him with his brothers...all looking so related!

Condolence: I'll never forget the days at the Showdown with James. He was always such a fun loving guy. Never seemed to be down. Golf in the morning/early afternoon and then to the Showdown for video golf and beer in the evening. How could you beat that? One of my favorite memories was going to Cain and Abels with James and Don Spencer to watch a Bears/Packers game. Don and I being Bears fans and, of course, James with his love for the Pack. I think the Pack won that game, but I'll always be in denial. You'll always be in our hearts, James.

Condolence: There are just too many great times with James and his family to even begin to count them, but one of my favorite memories has to be his telling of the time he rescued the cat from the empty house. I can distinctly remember him telling this story at least 3 time over the many years I have lived across the street from his mom's house. Each time was during or after a wonderful breakfast or incredible dinner put together by even more incredible, wonderful people; and the laughter never stopped as he got himself deeper and deeper into helping the unseen poor stuck animal. The short of the unlucky feline story was that the house was indeed empty, and James ended up in the ER. Not so funny the way I tell it, but I guarantee the self-effacing way James unraveled the story was hysterical and poignant at the same time. He was the one stuck and the cat was out, well, catting around! It was a classic, just like my friend and pal, James. I'll miss you more than you'll ever know. And I promise you, sweet James: I won't try to rescue any cats!

Condolence: Why I miss James: 5. Ready drinking buddy (met at the Showdown, of course). 4. He hated losing at Golden Tee (and bowling, and golf, and…). 3. His quick wit. 2. His concern for the welfare of others. 1. His gentle spirit (absent when engaged in one of the activities in #4 above).

Condolence: We were just hanging out. Having a good time, always. I knew the extreme joy or absolute anguish of either winning or losing to James at pinball, golf or any of the other goofy stuff we did together. But it never occurred to me then that these times together would be some of the sweetest I have ever known. Thank you, James. Without you, there would be a big chunk of my most fun times that would never have happened.

Condolence: So many memories you left for me and they all make me smile. I remember when you first came to Casis, calling yourself "New boy", with that great smile and easy and infectious laugh, it was just natural to be your friend. On one of our first trips to Vegas, you lost your money, (like the rest of us) and kept telling us if we could loan you $20, you'd triple it:)

Condolence: James and I met while working for the City of Austin in 1989 and like everyone else soon became good friends. From the start I felt there was nothing that we couldn't talk to each other about. He was great company and fun to be around whether for work or play. We went on a few trips together in the late '90s to Lake Tahoe and most recently in 2009 to the Colonial golf tournament in Fort Worth. That was just a week before his cancer was diagnosed. True to form, James didn't let that stop him from continuing to do what he did best. - Getting the maximum enjoyment out of life,no matter what he was doing at the time. I'm saddened by his passing and will miss James always, but feel fortunate for having known him. My heart goes out to April, the Rohlich family and all his many friends.

Condolence: James was always there for the best celebrations of our lives. When I first met James, it must’ve been at some party because that’s pretty much all we did back in 1989 and into the 90’s. There are photos of good times and some inexplicable behaviors, but what I most love and remember about James is how cool and easy he always was. And fun. He always made you feel happy and relaxed— like the best of Austin-cool personified. I am grateful he and April were a part of our celebrations—our wedding and our growing family not to mention other fun times. It was such a wonderful blessing to celebrate when he married April, his sweet and adoring love. I miss James, but I know he is as much a part of us now and forever as he has always been. I thank God for you, James, and I rejoice in your life.

Please accept my sincere condolences to the family.

Condolence: I had the best time working with James at the Austin Water Utility! We would laugh often. I remember he won BIG in Las Vegas and took us ALL to lunch (and that was a lot of people). He was so generous. I had a goofy calendar on my desk at work, and any time there was a question about gambling or golf, he was the one I went to for the answer. We would talk about movies and plays he had seen. (We will continue the chats when I get to the other side ... )
