Condolences

Condolence From: Deloris Hastings
Condolence: R. C. drew a picture of me in pastel chalk back in the 70s. The setting was the City Auditorium on Austin's Town Lake (now called Lake Lady Bird) where many vendors (such as R.C.) and prospective customers (such as I) came together. She captured a remarkable image of me with her talent that I have treasured for over 40 years. I remember that she asked me for my favorite color, and yes, she used that color to accent my picture. I also remember the price was $75. Mostly, I remember her talent, her kindness, and the fun.

Condolence: One of my most treasured possessions is the pastel of my daughter done by RC 23 years ago when my daughter was 4 years old. It is a beautiful likeness. And I will always remember the charm and grace of RC.

Condolence: My grandmother, Ethel Chin, looked forward to Rose's visits to Boston. Rose was very generous to my Por-Por who enjoyed showing us the beautiful gifts from her wonderful niece. I have a beautiful sketch of my Por-Por by Rose. Our family has cherished it.

Condolence: I saw Mrs. Wong painting many years ago at Laguna Gloria. This was at least 12-15 years before I commissioned a painting of my children. I had picked up one of her business cards and kept it, knowing that if I ever had children, I would want Mrs. Wong to paint them.

Condolence: R.C Wong did a pastel of my son when he was about 6 years old during Laguna Gloria Fiesta. He was curious what she was doing and kept leaning around asking questions. Mrs. Wong graciously answered his questions and started a running dialog or commentary of what she was doing and why. Erik kept leaning around trying to see what she was doing. When Mrs. Wong was finished she realized that Erik's portrait was of Erik looking around the easel… on an angle. She was horrified and wanted to do it over. I looked at it and thought it captured my son perfectly. He was always curious, asking questions and trying to see what was going on. When I gushed about how she had captured my son perfectly, she stopped and thought about it and started laughing and agreed that it was a very good likeness. I treasure the portrait and the memory. A memory of a woman who talked to my son, answering his questions without talking down to him which encouraged him to keep working on his creative endeavors.

Condolence: I will always treasure the lovely pastels of my children who are now grown. Rose was truly one of the most interesting and inspiring women in my early days in Austin. i enjoyed working with her on various Women's Symphony League projects through the years. Her memory is so special to me . She always had kind and proud words for her family.

Condolence: I am sorry that I did not know Mrs. Wong. But after reading the loving tribute to her life in today's paper, I just wanted to extend my sincere condolences to her family. What an incredible journey she took. To read about her guidance to 'make the most' of life moved me to tears.
