Condolence: I knew Dr. Dougal as an admired teacher and friend. I was always inspired by his wisdom and by the depth of his professional ability and by his human qualities as a very good man. One rarely encounters but a few of his kind in life. I am truly saddened by his death; and I feel some of the great loss that I know his family suffers at this time.

Condolence: I think it was the Fall of 1977 (maybe the Spring of 1978). Dr. Dougal's son, Leonard, and I were roommates in a one-bedroom, starving-student-special rental off Enfield, and we happened to be visiting the Dougal home in Northwest Austin one afternoon

Condolence: I would often interact with Arwin, sometimes in the 'famous' ENS building, but more often at department social functions. He would always have fascinating stories to tell about his research work, flying, investments - there was always that cheeky grin never far away either! As a part-time pilot myself who was envious of Arwin's plane, he once told me about when he got his new Cessna and he went on a trip to take it up to, I think, 18,000ft...just because the manual said it could get there! Apparently it was very cold!!! I was disappointed to lose touch when I moved to South Carolina, but delighted to find that my new colleague was Arwin's son Roger.

Back in the summer of 1962, Dr. Dougal opened the door to the wonderful world of science to this kid from Gonzales Texas. And for that and his many other kindnesses, I will be eternally grateful.

Condolence: To The family of Dr. Arwin Dougal,
I few years ago I attended a dinner for some grad students at The University of Texas. My wife Carole Bearden is the EA in the ECE Department. She has a obligation to attended these types of functions and most of the time I attend them with her. While at these dinners a friend of mine, Alex and I sit in the back and visit while the Grade Students, Faculty and Professors mingle and visit with each other. While Alex and I were sitting in the the back one time a gentleman came over and invited himself to sit down and introduced himself as Arwin Dougal. After five minutes of speaking with Dr. Dougal I new this guy meant business in what ever he did or does. Dr. Dougal, Alex and I sat there for thirty minutes or more talking about offshore drilling rigs, old cars and airplanes. Wow, how I would have loved to have him next to me when I worked in the Gulf of Mexico. Its not often you meet a Mans Man and a Mans Man he was. Over the last couple of years I have dropped Dr. Dougals name when talking to some pilots and they feel the same way as I do.
I am so glad I met him and wish I would have met him earlier.
I know he will be missed.
Vaya con Dios,
Terry Bearden
