Obituary for William R. "Bill" Penn

Bill Penn passed away on Friday, August 3, 2012 at the age of 87. He was born July 15, 1925 in Austin, Texas to Rhesa L. and Hildur Penn.
He graduated from Austin High School in 1943, and was a guard on the Austin High 1942 Texas State Championship football team.
Bill joined the United States Naval Air Corp in 1943 and served two years. He returned to the University of Texas, became a member of Phi Gamma Delta, and received his degree in 1948, a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. In January of 1948, he married Dorothy Lindquist and they were married for 64 years.
Bill worked for Proctor and Gamble, two engineering companies and opened his own company, Techline, Inc., where he sold power distribution materials and designed and supervised the building of electrical substations.
Bill was a member of University Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder, a Deacon, Superintendent of Sunday Schools and sponsor of the High School Department in Sunday School.
He was certified as a Professional Engineer, was Chairman of Central Texas Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a Director and Vice President of the Austin Chamber of Commerce, a Vice Commodore of Austin Aqua Festival, on Staff Command of Admirals Club, member of Westwood Country Club, Downtown Rotary Club, and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity.
Bill was the most loving, caring and helpful father for his three daughters with the greatest of love.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, brother Dr. Rhesa L. Penn, Jr., sisters-in-law Dorothy Penn and Betty Penn, and brother-in-law Keith Manroe. He is survived by his daughters Kathy Ikard (Frank), Susan French (Layne, Sr.), and Marilyn Richardson (West). Also by six grandchildren, Jay Davis, Lauren Davis, Rebecca French, Layne French, Jr., Grant Richardson and Adrienne Richardson, and sister Margaret Manroe, and numerous other family members.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Westminster Manor Healthcare Center for their loving, professional care of Bill and support of our family.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, August 6, 2012 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, North Lamar.
Bill's memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at University Presbyterian Church, 2203 San Antonio Street, 78705 with parking across the street at University Coop Parking garage on San Antonio St.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to University Presbyterian Church or The Settlement Home for Children.
