Julia (Judy) Dalton Hyland Greene, beloved mother and friend, died in Austin, Texas on August 8, 2012, from complications related to Alzheimer's disease. She was born on July 14, 1933 in Jefferson City, Missouri, to parents Geraldine Hall Dalton and John Montgomery Dalton, Governor of Missouri from 1960-1964.
Judy earned her bachelor's degree in History from Smith College and her master's degree in Clinical Psychology from Southern Methodist University. She held numerous teaching and professional positions in Dallas, including teaching art at The Lamplighter School, serving as Development Director at The Hockaday School and working in the trust department of Republic National Bank. In later years, Judy married Texas historian and author A.C. Greene. They shared the happiest years of her life while living in Salado, Texas. With A.C.'s encouragement, Judy developed a passion for researching, writing and performing monologues on women of faith and courage. She enjoyed performing at churches and universities throughout Texas and as far away as Illinois.
She is survived by her two daughters, Julie Hyland Ambler of Conroe, Texas, and Leslie Hyland Rodgers of Austin, Texas, her sons-in-law, Price Ambler and Dr. George Rodgers, two grandchildren, Julia Charlotte Ambler and JP Ambler, and her brother, John Hall Dalton, and his family of Kennett, Missouri.
Judy was known for her elegance, class and dignity, yet she always had a gift for relating to people from all backgrounds. With her beautiful smile, her lilting laugh and her delightful sense of humor, she was an excellent conversationalist and a gracious hostess who loved being in the company of friends and family. Judy was naturally creative, brimming over with talent in painting, writing, acting, singing and piano. Though she possessed tremendous wisdom and insight into people, she always remained playful and young at heart. A woman of great depth and sensitivity, Judy will be remembered for her vibrant spirit and strong faith. She was a devoted friend, mother and grandmother, always willing to lend an ear and offer comfort and encouragement. She was a very bright light who will be greatly missed by all.
